There is very little broad-based data available on lived realities, needs and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in India and its neighbourhood. However, broad-based data is inevitable to narrative building, policy and practice influencing. Given this, one of the most critical and important focus of our work is to create broad-based, primary data and evidence on the lives and lived realities, challenges, aspirations and narratives of LGBTQ+ communities and individuals.
It aims to bring to light the existing social, political, and economic structures and narratives, and how the inequalities entrenched in them influence and impact the lives of LGBTQ+ communities. The underlying aim is to contribute to shifts in public perceptions and policies towards recognising the inequalities and thereby move towards equal rights and inclusion.
Another important reason that we gather data is to be able to map needs, aspirations, capacity gaps and priorities of the LGBTQ+ community across the focus geography, so as to be able to design appropriate interventions. As an example, our community level Listening Circles focuses on, among other things, gathering information and mapping existing livelihoods, skills and resources available to queer-trans individuals.
Our archiving work includes documenting, recording, and preserving stories, lived experiences, expressions, and history of LGBTQ+ communities. We work on creating first-person stories of individuals from the community, to capture their realities, struggles, and joy. Our interest in this arena also includes documenting the existence of alternate LGBTQ+ communities both in the recent and historical times. We hope to build a body of evidence and anecdotes using a combination of historical evidences and first person lived-realities from present times, to change the narrative on the existence of alternate gender-sexuality individuals, expressions, and communities as an intrinsic part of our social, political and cultural landscape in the focus region.
